This non-credit component of the Veritas program encourages students to build on their coursework and understanding of the liberal arts through exploration of select cultural events as well as lectures and personal development opportunities offered on campus and in the community. These opportunities will be recommended to the Veritas committee by the Mount community, approved by the committee, and advertised to the community. The E-folio program developed by the Leadership Institute will offer students the opportunity to reflect on the 12 events they will experience in the course of their degree programs here at the Mount.
Event  Trip to Maui, Hawaii

During the summer of 2013, my family and I went to Maui, Hawaii. This was the first time I had ever been out there, but my family had been there previously. Though we were only there for less than a week, the trip had a profound impact on me. One day, we took a bus ride on the Road to Hana. This is one of the oldest and most historic roads in Maui and it makes a loop around the small island. When I first sat on the bus, I was not expecting such a beautiful journey. It was a long ride that took all day, but it was worth it. I cannot express the beauty I saw on this historic route. At times, the road was big enough for one car, where on one side we had rocks and mountains and on the other side was a cliff that dropped straight down to the ocean or rocks. It was terrifying, but exciting. At different points we were able to step out of the bus and explore the scenery. That was my favorite part. I felt so happy and at peace while visiting Maui, and I hope to return one day.

Trip to Montreal Canada

Canada

For my Fall break my sophomore year at the Mount, I traveled to Montreal, Canada to visit friends attending McGill University. I travel often on my own, so I was comfortable enough to take a bus from Baltimore to Montreal. It was a very long bus ride, but I enjoyed the scenery. It was during the fall, so all of the leaves were changing colors, which made the ride up beautiful. When I arrived, I was instantly in awe. Montreal is a beautiful and clean city filled with happy and nice people. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, and I had no trouble finding my way. One night, my friend took me out to try the famous dish Poutine for the first time. I did not think I would like it, but I was wrong. It's an interesting mix of flavors that work. As a native French speaker, I also enjoyed conversing with others in French.

Trip to Paris, France

France

Almost every year, my father sends my family to Austria to visit his family. I always love seeing my grandmother, my aunts and uncles, and my cousins who I had not seen for an entire year. Every once in a while, my brother and I are able to visit my mother's family in France. This year it was more important than before when we arrived in France because our uncle had recently passed away. None of my immediate family was able to travel to France for the funeral, and so visiting them after the tragedy was both important and necessary. One day, after spending the night with our cousins, my brother and I ventured out in Paris on our own. I have been to this romantic city many times before, and I knew it better than my brother. Therefore, I took us around to my favorite places, which included the Jardin du Luxembourg. I would come to this park whenever I needed space or time to unwind. After an intense and sad conversation with our family, my brother and I needed to go out and breath. We bought pastries from a well-known bakery and ate them in the park. It was a great experience to relax and unwind with my brother in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Trip to New York City

NY

For my Thanksgiving break, instead of returning to Los Angeles, I took a bus to New York City to visit my brother at NYU. This is his first year attending college, and I wanted to spend time with him in this big city in order to ease his home-sickness. I have visited New York before, but only briefly. I had never visited it like I did with my brother. Since he was on vacation like me, he was able to show me the non-touristic version of New York. He brought me to hidden cafés and unknown restaurants. My brother also brought me to his favorite locations when the city began to overwhelm him. On my last day, we walked from his dorm in Manhattan all the way across the Williamsburg Bridge and into Brooklyn. It was long, but a fun walk. I was able to see the change in neighborhoods and encounter different people from New York City.
